Jason Chew submits: In 2003, Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST) was granted approval for its novel antibiotic, Cubicin, for complicated skin and skin structure infections by Gram-positive bacteria, including drug-resistant strains. Over the next couple years, the stock doubled from about $10 to $20. The stock has languished in the $20 trading range for nearly five years now. There have been some pops and drops to be sure, but in general, the stock has barely budged.At the same time, revenues have grown quite nicely, exceeding even management’s expectations. In 2009, sales reached $562 million; it is expected to reach up to $650 million in 2010 and peak at $1 billion. Net income for 2009 was about $80 million and in fact, the company has been profitable since the third quarter of 2006. Novartis to Pay $422.5 Million to Settle Allegations: Biotech's Latest Tribulations
The Burrill Report submits: Novartis Pharmaceuticals (NVS) said it reached a $422.5 million agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania regarding civil and criminal allegations of the off-label promotion of Trileptal, as well as civil allegations relating to five other products. Novartis said the payments are in line with provisions made for a potential agreement. As part of the settlement, the company will enter a Corporate Integrity Agreement with Office of the Inspector General. It will require the company to implement for five years additional compliance-related measures, which include additional monitoring, auditing, training, education, reporting and disclosures.Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) officials told a Congressional committee that it had misled consumers and regulators in its effort to quietly remove its Motrin painkiller from the market, Reuters reported. J&J is facing a criminal probe. During the hearing, the lawmakers charged that the company had placed profits over the welfare of its customers. The company, which had sought to buy back its supply of Motrin through the use of contractors posing as customers, said its McNeil unit should have alerted stores and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to the 2009 recall.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
