According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 12,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with and 9,000 will die from AML in 2010. An estimated 47,000 patients in the European Union currently suffer from AML. Many AML patients are successfully treated with chemotherapy drugs, typically experiencing complete remission. However, the majority (75-80%) of patients will experience a relapse of leukemia, usually within one to two years.
