The Best Biotech Takeover Targets
R. Scott Raynovich submits:Many biotech stocks surged on the Friday before a long weekend on speculation that they could be takeover targets. Biogen-Idec (BIIB) and Allegan (AGN) were up 5% and 6%, respectively. This, on a day when the broader market was selling off. Bloomberg first got the rumor-mill going when it reported that Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) is on the prowl for a large biotech company. The rumors make sense, as big pharma needs to consume biotech companies in order to keep their product pipelines flowing. I decided to take a look at which biotech companies would be most attractive from a valuation standpoint. The three companies mentioned cited by Bloomberg as targets include Allergan (AGN), Biogen-Idec (BIIB), and Genzyme (GENZ). I also tossed in Amgen (AMGN), Gilead (GILD), and Celgene (CELG), mentioned in a WSJ blog.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Pfizer's Failure Provides Clarity for ArQule
Ohad Hammer submits:Monday Pfizer (PFE) announced that Sutent failed to prolong survival of lung cancer patients when given in combination with Tarceva. The drug led to an increase in progression free survival (PFS), which was the secondary endpoint of the study. The results are not published and there are several open questions such as the extent of PFS improvement, benefit across different subtypes and use of Sutent in patients from the placebo cohort after progressing on Tarceva. Nevertheless, chances to see Sutent+Tarceva as a standard of care for 2nd/3rd line NSCLC are slim.Pfizer’s failure provided some clarity for Arqule (ARQL) and its partner Daiichi Sankyo (DSKYY.PK), who plan to initiate a phase III study for ARQ-197 in combination with Tarceva. The indication Arqule is pursuing is very similar to that pursued by Pfizer, so had the Sutent trial been successful, it would have adversely affected ARQ-197’s prospects in general and potentially the required clinical route.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Why AEterna Zentaris Is Worth Double
Jeremy Richards submits:AEterna Zentaris (AEZS) is a biotech company that is undervalued and deserves a much high stock price based on analyst opinions and healthy pipeline prospects. AEZS, which now is at $1.15 per share, doesn't reflect the positive opinion from the EMA (European Medicines Agency) for its lead anticancer proprietary compound, perifosine. I firmly believe AEZS is now a must own.AEZS has out-licensed rights for perifosine to Keryx Biopharmaceuticals (KERX) for North America. I consider AEZS to be almost 100% below fair value given the enormous amount of potential world wide revenue from perifosine.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Latest Developments in the Pharmathene-SIGA Case Point to a Strong Buy for PIP
James Altucher submits:There’s been significant developments in the PIP-SIGA case since my last article (written when PIP was at $1.90) and I wanted to both summarize them and also establish some facts that seem to be points of confusion on the various message boards out there: Fact: SIGA has tried twice now to dismiss the case or portions of the case (note that this most recent attempt was an attempt at a partial dismissal) and twice the judge has ruled that this is going to trial. The second dismissal was predicted in my first article.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
