Merck Plays Down J&J Arbitration but Risk Remains
EP Vantage submits:Those bosses at Merck & Co (MRK) willing to discuss the issue right now are very much downplaying imminent arbitration with Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) over Remicade and Simponi. Understandable, perhaps, as while consensus is that Merck should win the case on technical grounds, certain other factors make this dispute not quite as cut-and-dry for Merck as it might be for J&J.As EP Vantage has previously reported, J&J has relatively little to lose over the arbitration and potentially a lot to gain (J&J ups the ante in battle for Remicade and Simponi, May 28, 2009). Merck, on the other hand, despite its protestations to the contrary, could see substantial lost value from anything other than an outright win in the dispute - even a compromise settlement could detrimentally impact Merck’s share price.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |

Name Investors Not Keen on Amgen Acquisition of Actelion
Pharmalot submits: Over the past week, word has leaked out that Amgen (AMGN), a beleaguered biotech, is interested in buying Actelion Pharmaceuticals (ALIOF.PK) in hopes of expanding into the cardiovascular market. But a couple of fund managers say they are not impressed with the possibility and one large Amgen shareholder complains that such a move is “faulty thinking by a hard-up executive staff.”What would Amgen get? For the most part, Actelion is a one-trick pony; the drugmaker last year derived about 85 percent of its revenue from Tracleer, a med that is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and generated about $1.5 billion in sales. There are also four experimental meds in the final throes of testing, including two that are also being developed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) (see pages 17 and 18 of the annual report here).Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
